Alec knows how he looks to Mundanes. Black marks that look like tattoos covering his skin, dark hair, dressed in black... not exactly someone most people would trust. "Sure you are." There's none of the snark in his tone that he would have directed at Jace if he'd said the same thing. Instead he sounds patient, knowing that if he forces things, he'll look like some sort of psycho.
