checking in? ([personal profile] checkingin) wrote in [community profile] checkingout2015-03-03 09:01 pm

a gent of good intent who's content to be ( OPEN )

Who: Everyone!
Where: The initial arrival rooms, the main lobby, all over the place.
When: March 3rd
What: Welcome, newbies.

ARRIVAL.
you wake up when you hit the floor in a dark room, and the air is knocked out of your lungs. the carpet is threadbare, worn with use, kind of dusty. and you're not the first person to endure this crash landing. nor will you be the last.

once your vision rights itself, you can see the well-lit hallway through the doorjam straight ahead of you. not to say there’s monsters in the shadows, but something propels you towards that door and out into the bright hallway beyond.

and once outside your room, you can hear it: the steady thrum of rain outside.

MAIN LOBBY.
there's a staircase at the end of the lengthy hallway you tumble out of. grab your suitcase and follow the dull green exit signs on the ceiling until you reach the disappointingly bland stairs that lead you down to the ornate old fashion hotel lobby.

to your left is a warmly crackling fireplace, to your right is a lobby desk. straight ahead are three large sets of doors, though only one of them is open to the public. and outside the few (curtained, permanently dark) windows is the continually steady hiss of rain. once you leave the hallway you wake up in, you won't be able to return.

welcome to the hotel.

FRONT DESK.
though there is a bell and a plaque designating the desk to be the main desk, the customer service desk, there are currently no staff members behind it. none shall answer your calls, either.

terribly sorry for the inconvenience.

SCREENING ROOM.
on a long pull-down screen, a silent version of the phantom carriage will be playing on loop. at the back of the room, between the neat rows of fold out chairs, mounted on a wobbly table is the old-timey projector, and mounted on the walls are some rather old speakers that warble out "terrifying" old music.

along the curtained windows is another long table, with a large bowl of popcorn and a large hot drink dispenser full of hot water, but without any tea or hot chocolate packets around.

OTHER.
the ballroom is currently closed, and the grand doors locked.

there is no main door leading to the outside, good luck trying to find one.

the doors to the courtyard and breakfast hall are unlocked, but looks like you've missed the morning meal. sucks for you.

ROOMS.
you've a room key with your assigned room number on it. all the new guest residences will be located on floors three and four. while there is an open elevator in the main lobby, and the buttons light up inside, the doors will not close. all in all, you'll be better off taking the stairs.

while they're the same stairs you undoubtedly came down to get to the lobby, the door to the endless hall everyone woke up in will not reappear between the main floor and the subsequent residential halls.

there are twenty rooms per floor. feel free to get to know your surroundings; or your neighbors as they trickle in around you.

EXISTING GUESTS.
it's late when the newcomers arrive, there's a good chance you'd been about to go to sleep (or just waking up, who knows, your mom's not here to tell you when to go to bed or get up). but if you're paying attention, you might hear the hustle and bustle in the lobby below; or maybe you're just drawn there because your gut told you to go join the commotion. whatever the case may be, go mingle!

( he's really not in the mood for sarcastic judgment. really, what's it to her if he's messing with a swing? he turns to look at her with a mildly annoyed expression. he only can vaguely guess what daycare is, but that's not the point. )

Seeing as there aren't any children about ( discounting that strange one with the glasses anyway ) I can't say I'm too concerned.

( not that he has to justify his attempts to dismantle it, but: ) The chain might be good for something if I can get it off.

Conan's ten.

[ For the sake of argument, she can't help but point it out. All the same, he's quite obviously not interested in swingsets, so she steps out through the downpour and heads over to give the chain a closer look. Upon inspection, she grimaces. ]

These are industrial. If you wanna break one of these links open, you're gonna need leverage. Or bolt cutters. Or both.

He can use the slide. ( so, no, he's not too hung up on that lad having a swing. considering it was constantly splitting rain, well, probably not a good idea for the kid to be out in it anyway.

he's going to guess that bolt cutters aren't going to happen, so. )
Leverage sounds more likely. If we got enough weight we might get the links to loosen. ( apparently the weight of one pirate is not enough. )

[ That gets a nod, and she turns to start hunting around the courtyard with a quick, ] I'll try to find something to pry at it with.

( he's had quite a few spectators and about as many questions, but no suggestions for help. he's not adverse to it, though. )

Appreciated . . . ( he stalls off, because he's not quite sure who she is. the place isn't packed, but he doesn't know everyone. he mostly keeps to himself. )

Skye. [ She offers, sensing the awkward gap after his thanks. While she speaks, she continues to prod around the jungle gym and the teeter totter, checking them for any loose parts that could be used to pry at the swing. It's either too thick, too reinforced, or just useless. ] Are you new, or did I just miss you in the first wave?

Killian Jones. ( or Captain Hook, but he's been keeping that one close to the chest. Regina has been open about her evil queening, he doesn't suspect announcing his villainy will get him very far. ) I've been about, darling. I'm nearly offended, I'm hard to miss.

( even his vanity seems half-hearted lately. )

[ Well, if he's going to draw attention to it, Skye will glance over, give him a once-over, and nod her approval after some consideration. ] Granted.

[ What? It's a fact. Her smile fades as she slaps a hand on the side of the play set, hopping down and huffing out a breath through rain droplets. ]

Hasn't really been where my head's at, but I'm glad someone's keeping all this in perspective. [ Even if it's Killian Jones with his leather jacket and his ego. ] I don't think there's anything out here pry-worthy. Maybe if we got some of the cutlery from breakfast next time it opens.

( a glance he has to ask for doesn't mean half as much, granted, he's just never one to mind a once over. his looks are certainly not something he's shy about she's a cute girl herself. an association he suspects would offend her, but it's easy for a man of three hundred to feel old. )

I'm focused on freedom, love, but I do have eyes. ( he's seen her around, but he doesn't mind a name to the face. )

( at her suggestion, he nods, looking close to impressed.) That's an idea. ( he's been meaning to frisk some flatware. why not take it at a swingset? what else has he got to do? as of right now, he kicks at the swing like it personally scorned him. )

Might be able to twist it free. The metal won't be able to take that forever. ( it'd just. . . take a bloody long time, is all. )

[ Approaching, she gives the swing chain a thoughtful twist, trying to assess it. For all that she's trying to suppress an amused smile at his compliments, she does a good job keeping her eye on the prize. Even if it's a pretty lame prize, all things considered: they could all use a little win right about now. ]

I'm starting to wonder if maybe we're coming at this from the wrong angle. Like, instead of looking at it like a problem, we should be thinking about what it means that we can't break it loose. I've never seen a play set this sturdy—have you?

( has he ever seen a swing set this sturdy? well he's really only been particularly close to this one. so he's a terrible judge of that. still, he doesn't have to point out his ignorance when that seems par for the course in this place. )

Well the windows are unbreakable, and the doors unpickable, why not godlike invulnerable chains to boot? ( it's not really the answer he wants. even if the chain won't do anything to help him, one thing going right would be a relief. )
hacker: (monotone voice: wow that is so wild)

[personal profile] hacker 2015-03-16 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
There are some metals where I'm from that are damn near indestructible. Adamantium. Vibranium. [ She gives the chain another pull, rocking all of her weight into it and digging her heels into the mud. After some comical grunting to go with her entire lack of progress, she straightens, giving up. ] They're rare, but they exist. Could be one of those.

( Hook is from a world with at least a bit of metallurgy advancement, but certainly not to the point of indestructible metals. well, unless enchanted blades count, and he doubts that is what she means. )

It would be par for the course, I suppose. Whoever brought us here, doesn't want us getting out.

( he just wishes he knew what they did want. )

still, however ridiculous it is, he has to keep up hope. if they all give in they'll never get out. )

When I was in Neverland, it was a matter of appeasing the master. There's got to be somebody pulling the bloody strings, we just have to find them.

[ A beat passes, and for that sweet moment, she appears to be casually accepting Neverland and moving on, not speaking to it. Focusing more on the meaning of what Killian is saying.

But then she cuts a quick look at him, eyes bugging. The radar of a one-time fangirl won't let her mind completely gloss over it: it just takes her an extra moment to get there is all.

Aye, Neverland.

( he's actually done a decent job of hiding who he is, he's gone an entire month without openly pointing out to anyone he's Captain Hook. considering he doesn't have his namesake, people might doubt the title anyway. still, his act isn't perfect, mostly because he doesn't completely understand the land without magic.

that they don't have pirates, and that they have never heard of Neverland. or, they have, but not as a real place. )

This place is a lot like Neverland, just worse weather.

Pan was the oldest on the island, you realize.

( so much for his admirable attempts to hide his fairy tale history. he was bound to slip eventually. )

I wasn't a Lost Boy, if that's what you're meaning.

I'm pretty sure Captain of the U.S.S. Never Grow Up would throw a conniption to hear you say that.

[ Old. Ha. And Skye is in no way predisposed to like Peter Pan because she was an orphan. Nope. She's trying real hard to defend her childhood problematic fave here. ]

Well, you're obviously not native or a merperson, so ... What were you doing in Neverland?

( he could also tell her that Peter Pan was secretly a disgusting worm of a man that gave up his own son to pretend to be eternally young forever, but there's only so much Neverland fun he wants to recount to a stranger. )

He can roll over in his bloody grave, then. ( not a lot of love lost between him and the little demon, clearly. ) I was trapped there while I tried to sort a way to kill a crocodile.

( he's not sure all this is especially relevant, but he's never been particularly quiet about his desire for revenge, either. even now that he's let go of it, he can't pretend it didn't rule him for the better part of his life. )
